I’ve come to this park once again. The sunlight still pours over the earth, warm and bright.
I remember back then, in order to live with you, I went against my family’s wishes, left Hsinchu, and moved north to this city. But I never imagined that after you arrived in this dazzling, neon-lit world, you would so quickly find someone new. And just like that, I was left behind.
After we parted, I stayed here—perhaps still holding on to a bit of hope? I’m not really sure what it was. I just found a place where I could linger—a park by Yongkang Street. Every weekend afternoon, I would take the Red Line straight to Dongmen Station. After getting off, I’d head to the convenience store next to the park, buy a few cans of Kirin, then walk into the park, find a quiet corner, and sit down, staring blankly at the passing crowds in the square. One beer after another, time quietly slipped away.
As evening approached, I would get up and slowly make my way to a bar next to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall—Revolver—to continue my journey with alcohol. I liked arriving around 6 p.m., when there weren’t many people and a sense of calm hung in the air. I’d sit down and keep drinking until my head started to ache, my vision grew blurry, and I staggered away. I liked that feeling—because everything became hazy. And I had long since stopped trying to see anything clearly.
