爵士钢琴是19世纪末诞生于新大陆的音乐类型与流派，它融合了欧洲古典音乐与当地多元的如非洲、印第安、加勒比等民族音乐，吸收来自四面八方的音乐营养，汇集大量诸如Scott Joplin等受过严格古典音乐作曲与钢琴演奏教育的音乐家，也有Erroll Garner这类完全不识谱却才华横溢的音乐天才，因此爵士钢琴不会受到任何音乐流派的束缚，形成一种复杂的音乐聚合形态，它或热情奔放，或柔情似水，或神秘含蓄，或天马行空，爵士乐的丰富多彩正如爵士乐的鼻祖之一路易斯.阿姆斯特朗曾经说过的那样:“如果你一定要问什么是爵士乐,那你就永远也不会知道。”
