摇摆乐（Swing music）起源于1930年前后，是爵士乐众多类型的一个分支。摇摆乐的出现是在经济大萧条时期，人们的精神慰藉之一。
摇摆乐是依靠贝斯和爵士鼓的节奏来支撑旋律组合，旋律组中包含小号、长号、萨克斯风、单簧管等铜管和木管乐器。有时也会加入小提琴和吉他等弦乐器，另外还有独唱的歌手。这样的阵容，也形成了豪华的大乐团（Big Band）。大乐团的编制通常在10-25位乐手，节拍速度大多为中等至轻快，强调小节里的下半拍或弱拍，因而带有摇摆的节奏感。摇摆乐乐团通常会由独奏乐手提前按照书面乐谱重新编曲，再加上演奏时的即兴表演，形成了不同于其他爵士种类和乐队的演奏模式。
摇摆乐不同于30年代之前的爵士，通常乐队中的合奏更为简化，独奏之间强调反复演奏的连复段，由于音乐技法的进步，个人即兴演奏也主要建立在旋律的基础上。同之前的演奏相比，独奏的演绎更具有冒险性。
除了摇摆乐之王Benny Goodman，还有Glenn Miller、Duke Ellington、Louis Armstrong和Ella Fitzgerald等知名大咖，都出过许多经典摇摆乐，他们之间也有大量的合作名曲。
