蓝调音乐也叫布鲁斯（Blues），就是公认的当代流行音乐的根源之一。它其实是美国黑人的民间音乐风格，早在南北战争之前就已成型，黑人奴隶们为它创造了独特的音阶和和声，并且用它来排遣苦闷的生活，寄托思乡之情，这使得蓝调音乐从一开始就带有很强的幽怨色彩，因此它又被称为是“怨曲”，是忧郁的象征。
Blues音乐发展到今天，已经被纳入主流音乐的行列，它的许多元素被更多的运用到摇滚乐及流行音乐中。但是传统的Blues音乐还是有着强大的实力，这个领域的音乐家有B.B.King、John Lee Hooker、Etta Baker、Junior Wells和Buddy Guy等等。
