LoFi低保真，与高保真（hifi）相对。它并不是一种音乐风格，而应该是一种做音乐的形式，或者说是做音乐的态度。一开始，lofi hifi都只是对某张特定专辑录音质量的描述。
首先，LO-FI音乐共同的特点是不追求精致的录音效果。常常会从一些歌曲中听到“沙沙”的摩擦声和一些其他的录音“噪音”。这“噪音”是故意也好，非故意也好，总之，这是LO-FI的一个特色。
带有复古的气息，喜欢的就是这个感觉。
一首歌曲中发声的乐器也不会超过四个。常常都是靠大三样（吉他，BASS，鼓）来完成的。而BASS和鼓显然多数时候起的是点缀作用，所以LO-FI音乐的一切气氛的营造主要是靠吉他来完成。吉他的效果运用常常是LO-FI音乐 营造意境的主要手段。
