吉他手和贝斯手调低乐器的音调并大量运用失真效果，加上使用重金属典型的编曲技巧——电吉他和贝斯演奏相同的连复段，这样就会营造出一种厄运金属独有的令人难忘的低沉厚重的音响效果。除此之外，厄运金属的另一个特点是持续缓慢的节奏与不和谐音（特别是以三全音的形式出现的）的大量使用，出来的音效让人感觉仿佛置身于萧索的世界一般，一切都是破败不堪，没有声息。
