1967年的那场 Monterey 是吉他之神 Jimi Hendrix的第一次主要的美国亮相，Jimi Hendrix在演奏完The Troggs 乐队的名曲Wild Thing之后，将吉他放在地上，跪在吉他前，将一种燃烧液浇在吉他上，然后看着吉他燃烧。之后，他再将烧得半残的吉他拿起来，使劲儿砸。这一幕，成为了摇滚史的一个经典时刻。而史上第一个砸吉他的摇滚乐手也在那场音乐节上，便是同台The Who的主唱兼吉他手Pete Townshend。The Who最后唱那首″My Generation″时， Keith Moon学吉他手把自己的鼓踢开，结果把脚给扭了。这场以“博爱”为主题的音乐节聚集了大约5万名摇滚乐迷，出现了空前的盛况。蒙特里国际流行音乐节也由此成为众多摇滚音乐节的根源。
