纽约酷爵士音乐节是新港爵士音乐节的延续，它开始于1954，在二十世纪八十年代，“新港音乐节”被搬到了纽约。这场演出从1984年6月22日开始一直持续到7月1日下午。在大概一周的时间里，到场的观众依次看到 Miles Davis，Oscar Peterson，Benny Carter，Stan Getz，Sarah Vaughan，Joe Williams，Gil Evans和 Stephane Grappelli 等大师和新秀的精彩演出。
