与萨克斯风、小号、钢琴等乐器相较之下，吉他在早期爵士乐当中是比较没有地位的，主要的原因便在于音量的大小。在1940年代以前流行的摇摆（Swing）爵士乐，由于多半是以乐团的形式演出，故此一时期又被称为大乐团（Big Band）时期。在其他乐器的包围之下，当时尚无成熟的技术将声音放大的吉他，其原本的音量无法与其他乐器匹敌，也就无法担任重要的角色。一直到了1936年，吉他名厂Gibson推出了第一把装有实用化的拾音器（pick-up）的吉他ES-150，吉他手们才拥有了能与萨克斯风手们抗衡的兵器。
